An Interview with Ass. Prof. Pavol Matula whose book "Key to Radiobiological Modelling Effects in Radiation Oncology" gained 4th position in BookAuthority contest "Best Radiation Oncology Books in 2019" 🏆

🔹 What encouraged you to author this revealing publication "Key to Radiobiological Modelling Effects in Radiation Oncology"?

My professional dream of the medical physicist in Radiation oncology for long years has been to overcome the paradigma from 3D and 4D (time) physical plans to the 5th dimension – encompassing radiobiological processes in tumours and normal health tissues by mathematical modelling. This translation research flowed into the development of a computer program „BioGray“ for simultaneous calculation of tumour response prediction and normal tissue complications. Contribution of this research project has been presented gradually on international conferences, published and widely spread to radiotherapy centres in EU and USA.
In 2015 I received a proposal from the editor of your institution (Mgr. Mihaela Melnic) to publish the results of our research work in Lambert Academic Publishing. We accepted this proposal and the book was published (for a slowness of authors) till in February 2018.

🔹 Tell us more about you. Where are you from and why you decided to publish a book?

I am working nearly 50 years as a medical physicist at the Department of radiation oncology in Institute of Oncology, Košice, Slovakia. In time of start of computer technique to radiotherapy (since 1970) my team developed a home made computer program „UNIV“ for treatment isodose plans in external therapy and brachytherapy which was widely distributed to all radiotherapy centres in Czechoslovakia (24 centres) and round 15 years was applied for treatment thousands and thousands of cancer patients. After start of dedicated treatment planning systems based on CT scans I began to develop SW for radiobiological modelling effects in radiation oncology which gradually encompassed a scale of treatment modalities as external beam therapy, brachytherapy, stereotaxy, proton therapy, their combinations and conditions for re-irradiation. A comprehensive program (BioGray) for simulation of the tumour control probability (TCP) and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) like this (with several exceptions) was absent and not published. Therefore the proposal from Lambert Academic Publishing became a suitable chance to fill up our dream.

🔹What is the feedback on your publication so far?
Our book „Key to Radiobiological Modelling Effects in Radiation Oncology“ made it to Book Authority best new Radiation Oncology books in first half year 2019 ( the fourth post).

I received tens of congratulations and requirements for instalations of the program BioGray to radiotherapy centres, requests for short study stays in our institute and e-mail questions mainly for management and calculation of residual tolerance doses of normal tissues for re-irradiation in the relapse of diseases.

🔹What authors do you like to read? What book or books have had a strong influence on your writing?

The book written by prof. R.G.Dale, B.Jones: Radiobiological Modelling in Radiation Oncology, BIR 2007. Any articles from prof. J.Fowler - the author of the concept: Biological Effective Dose.

🔹 It is part of our business concept to actively look for new authors. What was your first reaction when you received our proposal to publish your academic work with us?

It was pleasurable feeling and satisfaction that our long years endeavour in the field of translation research can be interesting and atractive for readers, medical community and wider society with the basical aim - to improve treatment results of cancer patients.

🔹What was your experience with our team like?

Cooperation with editor (Mgr. Mihaela Melnic) and the team of LAP was valuable, flexible and accommodating. Thank you once more.

🔹 Are you planning another book publication? And if so, on which topic and can you imagine cooperating with us in the future again?

Yes. Topic: Management of re-irradiation in Radiation Oncology

🔹 Any last thoughts for our readers?

Look for and read books continually - it is a gate to attainments and professional matureness.

Author Feedback!

"Having published my 10th monograph Metamateriality: Redefining Matter in Contemporary Art with LAP – Lambert Academic Publishing on 18th July 2019, has been truly invaluable, as it also marks the 10th year of my excellent collaboration with my Publisher. The monograph proposes new art-forms in the context of contemporary metamaterial research, raising the relationship of research, creativity and innovation to a different level of development necessary for advancing art in relation to the philosophy of science, critical theory, chemistry and materials science. Special thanks to Dr. Wolfgang Philipp Müller for his unique vision and publishing program development, as well as the Editorial and Marketing teams (including Ms. Kristine Vasaraudze), for supporting my work. My Editor Ms. Koushina Tulloo has been exemplary in all aspects; diligent, reliable and enthusiastic about her work. I prefer LAP – Lambert Academic Publishing for publishing my work, as they are genuinely independent publishers, valuing the freedom, expertise, hard work and authorship of the creator of the work. It is impressive that all these years they have been providing excellent support throughout the publication process and they have been marketing the work in the best possible way. All these are important and unique qualities, enabling the best possible dissemination of the author’s research contribution across various contexts of professional and scholarly study and activity, inspiring future researchers and practitioners.
